2023 IP Members Choice Award

This ultra-exclusive, ultra-secluded boutique hotel is set on the savanna of South Africa's Greater Kruger National Park. An oasis of green against the rugged and wild bushveld of Klaserie Private Nature Reserve, Last Word Kitara's luxurious lodge and camp is at the center of South Africa's safari country — a place where elephants roam, leopards lounge, and lions roar.

  • Set out on safari to spot Africa's Big Five: Lions, leopards, elephants, rhinoceros, and buffalo
  • Dine on three-course dinners from decks overlooking the Klaserie river
  • Soak in savanna views from the resort's infinity-edge pool

And because "Kitara" is the word for a traditional guitar in the local Xitsonga language, you'll also experience authentic African tribal arts and culture through song, dance, and ceremony. Enjoy an unforgettable evening under the South African stars and sample authentic local cuisine during dinner in a boma, a traditional African enclosure originally intended to keep animals in (or out) and now serves as a center for eating and entertainment.

Take us back - EXCEEDED all our expectations!!

Mon Aug 11 2025 13:51:36 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time) by Sharp_23

We’ve been fortunate to take many special trips together—but not many that made me cry when it was time to leave. This one did. Definitely because of the unforgettable way the team at Last Word Kitara Lodge made us feel and the experiences they created for us. In this intimate, boutique setting, we formed real bonds with the people who cared for us, and they became an inseparable part of our experience. Pierre, Susan, Vusi, Marla, Nathan, Chef Moxi - we thank you all for making this an adventure we will talk about for the rest of our lives. We also thank you for putting up with us. The lodge is absolutely beautiful and feels as if you have everything to yourself. The gorgeous rooms with the most comfortable beds are beautifully decorated with attention to all the details. I absolutely loved using the outdoor shower surrounded by nature and wildlife.. We got wonderful use of the pool in early August and couldn’t believe it when over 30 elephants and 2 giraffes showed up while we were in the pool. It’s what dreams are made of. Someone was always checking in to see if you needed anything and to just have a good chat and a laugh. Chef Moxi’s gourmet meals were exquisite and so delicious served at tables that were beautifully decorated each night in a different theme. Please - take us back now! Every morning someone was there to make whatever kind of coffee we wanted and the team ensured we had everything we needed to be comfortable on our game drives. The six game drives we experienced went far beyond anything we could have imagined. Our guide, Pierre, and tracker, Vusi, were not only incredibly skilled and knowledgeable, but also friendly, and genuinely passionate about sharing the magic of the bush. Every drive felt personal and thrilling—whether we were quietly observing in awe or chasing the promise of something extraordinary just around the bend. Thanks to their dedication, we witnessed an astonishing variety of wildlife, often up close, in moments that felt like pure adventure. We will forever be grateful for the care, expertise, and joy they brought to every outing. Leaving was harder than we expected, and if we could have stayed longer, we would have in a heartbeat. This was, without question, one of the best experiences of our lives. Team Kitara - from Mike and Jen We Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

There is such a lovely intimate atmosphere at this lodge. The staff are wonderful, and so welcoming. The lodge itself is most beautifully furnished and decorated. The food is superb! Our guide Nathan, and tracker Vusi were so enthusiastic and knowledgeable. They made every effort to seek out places where we would be certain to see animals. Their knowledge of the birds, plants and trees as well as the animals made each game drive rewarding.

5/5 Stars - Unforgettable Once in a Lifetime Luxury Experience

An Unforgettable Safari Experience at Last Word Kitara Lodge Our family recently returned from what can only be described as the most incredible safari experience at Last Word Kitara Lodge in Klaserie Reserve. Having been on safari once before in a busy, crowded setting, this exclusive experience was everything we had hoped for and so much more – especially meaningful as it was our adult children's first time on safari. Exceptional Staff – The Heart of Our Experience From the moment we arrived, every single member of the team exceeded our expectations. Sonnie, our airport transfer driver, set the tone perfectly – friendly, knowledgeable, and we were already spotting game on the drive in! Our safari team was absolutely outstanding. Vusi, our tracker, was simply incredible. His dedication to ensuring we saw every possible animal was remarkable – he would literally cut routes through vegetation with clippers to get us close enough for amazing viewing without disturbing the wildlife. His enthusiasm, professionalism, and entertaining stories made every drive memorable. Nathan, our guide, brought such passion and excitement to every sighting that he seemed more thrilled than we were at times! His educational approach was fantastic – from spotting a black mamba's shed skin to sharing fascinating animal behaviour insights. His fiancée and host Marla was equally wonderful, always relaxed and smiling with five-star hospitality that felt effortless and genuine. Pierre and Susan were also fabulous hosts who went above and beyond to make our stay special. They all made our son's 25th birthday truly memorable with decorations and champagne, and were incredibly thoughtful about our 39th wedding anniversary. Their conscientiousness and attention to every guest's needs was remarkable. Accommodation & Amenities The rooms were stunning, featuring outdoor showers overlooking the river and thoughtful touches like heated blankets to return to warm beds each evening. Special treats were left for our anniversary, and even small details like the beautifully raked sand patterns by the groundskeepers showed the care put into every aspect of our stay. The location is magical – even without going on drives, we could watch animals coming down to drink at the river from our accommodation. Wildlife & Safari Experience The terrain is hilly and richly vegetated, which makes animal spotting more challenging but incredibly rewarding when you're in the expert hands of guides like Vusi and Nathan. We were treated to amazing sightings including elephants, giraffes, buffalo, hippos, zebras, impalas, wildebeest, hyenas, jackals, civet, wild cats, diverse bird species, monkeys, baboons, porcupines, rhinos, and our absolute favourites – the lions! Each drive included sunset drinks and morning coffee breaks, adding to the luxurious experience. Culinary Excellence The food was exceptional throughout our stay. Chefs Sibu and Moxe (apologies if spelling is incorrect) created fresh, gorgeous meals that never left us hungry. Our vegetarian daughter had plenty of delicious options, and we all particularly loved the boma fireside dinners with incredible barbecued game and beautiful side dishes. Final Thoughts This truly was a dream holiday that created memories we'll treasure forever. The combination of exclusive wildlife viewing, exceptional hospitality, stunning accommodation, and passionate staff created an experience that surpassed all expectations. Thank you to every single person at Last Word Kitara Lodge for making our family safari so extraordinarily special. We cannot recommend this lodge highly enough for anyone seeking an authentic, luxury safari experience. Would we return? Absolutely – this sets the bar impossibly high for future safari experiences!

Luxury safari stay

Wow - the first word I used to describe the Last Word Kitara - from the moment we arrived it was just wonderful. Recommended to us by our travel agent as part of a holiday to celebrate my 50th birthday, it blew us away and we couldn't have asked for a better experience than the one we had here. The lodges were lovely, I loved the safari theming around the room and it overlooked the Klasserie river which the elephants came down to a couple of times, so it was great to see wildlife from our veranda. There is an outdoor shower and a rolltop bath. The staff were fantastic, Susan, Pierre, Nathan and Marla were our hosts for the 3 nights we spent there. Nothing was too much trouble, they were so friendly and ensured that we had a memorable stay. We felt like family by the end of it. We arrived, had lunch then got taken out on our first drive that afternoon by Pierre and Vusi who were both really knowledgeable and ensured that we managed to see the big 5 by the end of our stay. My highlight of the trip was seeing a leopard up a tree eating an impala - we got some stunning photos. I especially enjoyed the sundowners with a G&T and a hot chocolate at breakfast time with a shot of Amarula. The food was also amazing - the kudu was our favourite, so shout out to Moxi the chef and his team - I also was presented with a birthday cake which was lovely. I would definitely recommend a stay here if you want a luxury experience and a warm welcome - we wouldn't hesitate to go back.

Probably the most amazing place in the world.........

Our experience at the Last Word Kitara was absolutely incredible. Having been lucky enough to stay in some of the 'best' hotels and holiday resorts in the world, this place knocked them all out of the park. We went as part of our honeymoon and it was by far the best part. Set in a serene game reserve, on the side of a river, be prepared for constant wildlife spotting from the infinity pool over looking the river (don't believe me? check out the photo below), sublime and unique food and game drives with an expert team of guides and trackers. The service was some of the best we ever recieved, we were looked after from the minute we arrived to the minute we left and given a truly luxury experience. The lodges were of fantastic quality. The lodge is both modern but in keeping with the south african style. Enjoy an outdoor shower, spotting wildlife late at night from the balcony and a very comfortable nights sleep. The drives were fantastic with both our guide Nathan and our tracker Patrick using all of their knowledge and experience of the reserve to enable us to have unique experiences with 4 of the big 5, as well as lots of other animals. The drives are very unique, often not seeing any other cars or groups on most drives, giving you private experiences with the animals which were tracked. The guides and trackers also make an excellent G&T when it comes to sundown drinks! The team at Kitara, particularly Nathan and Marla made our trip extra special and we created memories which will stay with us forever. We couldn't recommend highly Kitara enough - if you are looking for a truly luxury experience, this is the place to go.
