Japanese Paintings, Castles, and Sunsets on Lake Shinji

Matsue Castle - One of Japan’s oldest remaining castles dating back to 1611, sometimes referred to as the “black castle” after the color of its exterior walls, is less than a 10-minute drive from the hotel. Hop on a boat cruise to learn how this 17th-century castle survived a war. Boats leave every 15-20 minutes and wind around canals, moats, and the Horikawa River. Peep the inside of the castle to view period arms and artifacts from the Meiji Period.

Lake Shinji - Famous for its breathtaking sunsets, head to Shinjiko Ohashi Bridge for the best views in the area. Sunset cruises are also an option in this lake which is connected to Nakaumi Lagoon. This means freshwater and seawater mix together which results in an eye-popping variety of sea life; one of the reasons Matsue is so famous for its seafood. Hot springs are also located along the coast for dimension and variety on your visit to Matsue.

Adachi Museum of Art - Head to JR Yasugi Station and hop on a free shuttle bus to this cultural gem that is rated a three-star site in the Michelin Green Guide Japan. Take a moment to reflect in the Japanese-style garden and then pop into the museum to take in the serene beauty reflected in the paintings of Yokoyama Taikan, who created the Japanese painting technique of Nihonga
