Wonderful! I enjoyed a few days of rest, amenities were wonderful, room was clean and a true retreat. What a special place. I will definitely have this property on my list to return to in the warmer months so that I can enjoy more of the onsite activities and amenities.

We stayed here for a couple of days to celebrate my 50th birthday after staying at the Inn at Little Washington. Massage and spa was good we had a couples massage and suite. Our room was nice and comfy with king sized bed and fireplace. Most of the activities that we wanted to do aren’t actually on site; the trap shooting and sporting clays are about 45 min away same for kayaking. Given we live only about an hour from the resort these activities really didn’t make sense for us getting away as a couple. We’re used to the Greenbrier or Palmetto Bluff or even Homestead where all activities are truly on site. The room service was serviceable but with pretty limited menu. The real problem for us on this stay came when we booked Harriman’s for my birthday dinner; all was going well until we got the beet and goat cheese appetizer and it had a piece of glass in the food. At first when my girlfriend showed it to me I thought it was perhaps some kind of crystallized chunky salt or something. It was indeed a piece of glass which in all my years of traveling and dining at many fine restaurants all over the world I’d never had something like this happen. I immediately told the server Julio and the executive chef came to speak to us and said he had no idea how this could happen and apologized asking us if there was anything he could do. Our confidence was clearly shot in this restaurant and we were both concerned that we had somehow perhaps already swallowed some glass. We abruptly left and went into town to get something to eat. We had some pizza at Knead (pretty fabulous Neapolitan style pizza) and when we returned to the room, there was a bottle of champagne and a note of apology for the glass in our meal. A few things were off about this: 1. I requested no alcohol for our room (i don’t drink) 2. The card was addressed to both of us as “Mr. And Mrs. X” even though in our reservation i had booked us both with our names which are not the same. This was followed by a phone call from the food and beverage manager, apologizing profusely. We heard the same thing when we checked out the following day, with the manager asking us to “stay with them again and give them another shot” especially since we’re local to DMV. All pretty unbelievable actually, since none of these offers of apologies came with any change in our $3k+ bill. There isn’t much that this place offers that other resorts can do much better with just a little more distance, Middleburg is a lovely town and we’ll be returning to visit for sure. But it’s “one and done” with the Salamander Resort. Don’t stay here and certainly don’t eat here.

Where do I start?! My past 4 days at the Salamander Middleburg has been pretty much perfect. I booked this stay last minute when my prior plans had changed due to a major snafu at another hotel; this ended up being a blessing in disguise. After my first night, I decided to extend my original three day stay. There are many five star/five Diamond hotel resorts. A few things that set this place apart from the rest for me: 1. They excel on all levels: beautiful impeccably clean room with plenty of space and all amenities thoughtfully provided; well prepared and presented food; incredible spa (worth its separate review!); lovely grounds. 2. Dog friendly while ensuring things remain clean and orderly. As a a first time dog owner, I appreciate making my minidoodle and me truly welcome while ensuring rules are followed to maintain the beautiful facilities. 3. Although this is a 5 Diamond resort (deservedly so), it is warm and unpretentious. I was told by the staff and a guest who has been coming here for years that the owner wanted this to be a “living room” for the guests and the community. She has succeeded in this goal. 4. Most importantly, I want to give huge kudos to the people who work here: the staff across the board are professional, skilled, but most importantly, kind & considerate. This speaks volumes about the management and owners of the Salamander Middleburg. I am grateful I was able to spend a much needed few days away. I will definitely be back. Thank you again to the wonderful team here for such a lovely stay!

I haven’t taken the time to write a review in a while but The Salamander deserves one. Like other five-star resorts we’ve visited, Salamander’s public spaces and our room were beautiful, comfortable, large and spotless. I don’t think there’s a room without a lovely view. What sets Salamander apart is the attention to detail. I forgot to move a towel near the shower but when I got in, I found a nook in the shower where they stack bath towels. There are the usual containers of shampoo, conditioner and liquid soap affixed to the wall but there’s also a bar of soap (our preference). We had a fantastic dinner at Harriman’s and again, the room was designed to optimize the views from every table. Anna, our server, was wonderful. When we were finishing, she asked if we wanted to take the delicious breads. We did. The next day we opened the package and we found the bread, along with a sculpted pat of butter, napkin and utensils. The breakfast options at Harriman’s were delicious and our waiter, Mohamed, was just a delight. Every staff member with whom we interacted was gracious and helpful. The resort offers lots of activities and the grounds are beautiful. Our stay was a perfect birthday getaway.
