With 15 stylishly designed villas 14 dome-roofed open-plan suites around the main lodge and a picturesque infinity pool, Gondwana Game Reserve makes for an ideal romantic escape. The open-plan interiors are quintessentially African, with taupe tones, animal hides, and raw-wood furniture. From your private deck, you can gaze over a watering hole where elephants come to bathe, while a skylight allows you stargaze from your four-poster bed.
If traveling with your family or your group of friends, book one of the 15 villas, ranging from two to four bedrooms. After dark, gather for a traditional braai (barbecue) on the deck, then sit by the open fire in the living room. For a truly resplendent stay, reserve Ulubisi House, a secluded three-bedroom villa that comes with your own butler, chef, safari guide, and swimming pool.
Gondwana Game Reserve specializes in modern Pan-African cuisine, mixing ingredients and techniques from Africa and Europe. Delight in multi-course menus at Kwena Lodge, or take meals back to enjoy in your suite or villa. Sip cocktails by the pool at sunset, dine by lantern light under the trees, and feast on grilled game under a starlit sky at an authentic braai.
Kwena Restaurant – Open for lunch and dinner, as well as a buffet breakfast, the rustic-chic interiors of Gondwana Game Reserve’s main restaurant feel especially cozy at night when the fire pit blazes and the lights are turned low. Large picture windows and a terrace make it easy to spot animals as you dine on beautifully plated dishes, complemented by fine local wines and a stellar cheese board.
Between safaris, join a guided nature walk through the Fynbos vegetation, spotting birdlife and picnicking among the king proteas, South Africa’s national flower. Go mountain biking on graded routes, fish in crystal-clear streams, or simply relax with a hot stone massage or a Serengeti Scrub at Gondwana Spa. Meanwhile, give your kids the trip of a lifetime by signing them up for the Junior Ranger program, which offers educational game drives, fun activities, and a backpack to take home.
Away from the reserve, you can swim, surf, and sunbathe around Mossel Bay, or go cage diving with sharks around Seal Island. Visit South Africa’s oldest microbrewery in Knysna, a gorgeous coastal town with an artsy vibe, and continue along the coast to Plettenberg Bay to explore its mountains and white-sand beaches. If you a round of golf sounds good, there are more than 20 courses in the region, so you can tackle the links courses at Oubaai Golf Course or tee off at the spectacular clifftop course at Pinnacle Point.
