Although I was disappointed with the location of our room (see below), this resort rates 5 stars because the grounds are beautiful, the accommodations are luxurious, the food is fine and the service, above all, is exceptional. I'd been wanting to stay here for 18 years, ever since my wife and I spent a few hours here with friends back in 2007. The Ojai Valley Inn is beyond our usual hotel budget, so we waited for a special occasion: our 20th anniversary. When staff learned this, they were so gracious: giving us the best table at The Oak restaurant, greeting us with a bottle of champagne upon arrival, etc. Thank you for that! So about our room... We booked a Vista Luxury Room, but because we have the Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts perk, we were automatically upgraded to a Fireplace Shangri-La Room. It was Room 771 in the Villa Los Padres building, in the far corner of the resort. The room itself was wonderful – but it was mere feet away from an extremely busy service road, with staff vehicles whizzing by every minute or so – some of them extremely loud (fix those motors!). Our patio wasn't private at all and only offered a view of a small parking lot. In short: don't book Room 771! Staff is surely aware which rooms here are more popular than others, so it was a bummer that the resort's booking system automatically placed us in one of the least desirable locations. The woman at check-in could have told us, "Well, we have a Fireplace Shangri-La room available, but it's not in the quietest or most secluded spot. Would you rather take a smaller room with a view, privacy, etc.?" I suppose we could have demanded a room change once we drove out to Room 771, but it's not our style – we tend to make due with what we get. (My wife hates haggling and/or complaining.) But my point is that we shouldn't have been put in that position in the first place, especially as the resort was nowhere near capacity (a woman checking in next to us got the exact same upgrade). I just wish hotels' booking systems would prioritize the most desirable rooms for their guests, not the least. I've had this happen at other hotels as well.

Some bright spots significantly marred by exceptionally poor service experiences across the property. Staff carried an attitude of entitlement and annoyance from reception, to the pools and golf pro shop. A marked decline in service from a place that formerly excelled at it.

This is a paradise in the California hills. This place has outstanding service, beautiful rooms, and all the amenities you could ask for. The food is really good, and the people who work here seem to like their jobs. We were here for a family wedding, and it was an amazing couple of days. The grounds are also beautiful and the views from almost anywhere on the property are spectacular.

A thoroughly wonderful experience. The atmosphere is so relaxed, the staff is so welcoming and friendly, the food and drink is so good, and the available activities are so varied, that if you do not have a great time, then it has to be your fault.

Great location, fun little town nearby. Service and food outstanding. It can be noisy. Loud talking at pool and the background music distracts from the beauty and peace of the place. Our room was above the pub. While the rooms are generally sound proof, the base line from the recorded music vibrates through the walls and is annoying.
