SHOP, SIP, STROLL, AND SAY HELLO TO SEA CREATURES

The Shops at Water’s Edge: Just steps from the resort, this collection of boutiques and shops is worth a browse, especially if you’re a bride-to-be or event planner. Visit Burgundy Bookstore for independent book titles, trending bestsellers, and author’s events. Nearby Tanger Outlets houses familiar names like J. Crew, Loft, and Williams Sonoma, and Clinton Crossing, an outdoor shopping area 10 minutes away, is the place for high-end stores including Calvin Klein, Dooney & Bourke, Kenneth Cole, and Saks Fifth Avenue.

Connecticut Wine Trail: One of the fastest growing wine regions in the U.S. is right on your doorstep. Start out in the quaint town of Clinton, where Chamard Vineyards rolls out award-winning wines. We played sommelier with their Heritage Merlot and Estate Reserve Chardonnay, while enjoying artisan cheeses during a vineyard picnic. Take a leisurely drive up the shoreline, and pop in to Saltwater Farm Vineyard in Stonington and Priam Vineyards in Colchester.

Historic Town of Essex: This harbor village steeped in history was named the “Perfect Small American Town” in 1,000 Places to See Before You Die. Visit the Connecticut River Museum, which was once a warehouse dating back to 1878 but now hosts exhibits and special events. After, stop by the Tap Room at the historic Griswold Inn for Signature Clam Chowder, or visit their Wine Bar if wine flights and innovative tapas are more your thing.

Mystic Aquarium: A great place for interactive fun with marine life. Get up close and personal with New England’s only Beluga whales, or join Pizza with Penguins, and make friends with African Penguins over dinner. Take a peek at the Animal Rescue Center to see the wonderful work done to rehabilitate stranded marine animals.
