Historic Landmarks and Peaceful Parks

Toyama Castle Park (Azumi Castle) - Originally built in 1543, this towering castle was once owned by lord Mizukoshi Katsushige. The estate was sieged by 100,000 soldiers in 1585 and suffered severe damages during the attack—the castle has since gone through several restorations. Surrounded by a moat and lush gardens, this historic property is the perfect site to explore during the spring when the attached garden’s cherry blossoms bloom. You can even head inside and up to the observation desk for sky-high views of the grounds.

Fugan Canal Kansui Park - A quiet waterside park easily accessible by Toyama Station, this serene space is perfect for afternoon strolls, picnics, and day trips. The iconic Tenmon-kyo Bridge hovering over the water is the park’s main attraction, but be sure to visit the Starbucks, often noted as the most beautiful Starbucks in Japan. After fueling up on java, visit La Chance for a taste of French cuisine and enjoy the park’s numerous events throughout the year. Our favorite? We suggest stopping by for fireworks under the stars.

Kaiwo Maru - Used regularly as a training vessel, this ship was actually the first to visit the United States on its 2010 voyage. Kaiwo Maru, meaning “King of the Sea,” replaced its namesake which was originally built in 1930. Carve out time to catch the sail drill, where more than 200 crew members unfurl the ship’s 30,000 square feet of sails.
