Hokkaido’s Historic Sights, Hikes, & Shopping

Clock Tower - Constructed in 1878 with a clock purchased from Boston, this is Sapporo’s most famous landmark and oldest building. Just 10 minutes from the hotel, the clock is reported to have never missed tolling the hour since its construction (that’s more than 139 years, but who’s counting?). After navigating the crowds for a photo op, head inside the wooden tower to check out the museum.

Odori Park Sapporo TV Tower - Splitting the city of Sapporo into north and south sections, this area has been reinvented several times from a potato field during World War II, a baseball field, and eventually, as it is today, a flower garden. A 10-minute drive from the hotel, you can see the iconic Sapporo TV Tower. It’s totally worth climbing up to the observation deck, or taking the lift to the top, for a spectacular view of all of Odori Park and the city of Sapporo. If you swing by after dark, you’ll be treated to a dazzling display of lights.

Mount Moiwa - Smack dab in the middle of Sapporo, we only had to climb halfway up the mountain before we took the “Morris Car”, or cable car, to the summit where we ogled jaw-dropping, panoramic views of Sapporo, Ishikari Bay, the Sea of Japan, and Shokanbetsu Peak in Shike town.

Susukino - Nothing compliments the cool weather like a piping hot bowl of Ramen, which we found in plenty of little shops in the alleyway of Ramen Yokocho. After our bellies were full, we were ready to venture out to the glut of shops, restaurants, bars, karaoke rooms, and pachinko parlors. The thriving craft beer scene and brewpubs in the area are something to keep on your radar while making your way through this neon-lit neighborhood.
